Re: Cutting within the reserve (Illegal Logging Incident)

I would like to congratulate President Felipe Calderon on his commitment to protecting the forests that serve as the overwintering grounds for the monarch butterfly. Those who have followed this phenomenon for many years will certainly have a sense of optimism - though considering the history, a cautious optimism.

I visited the reserves during the period of February 28 to March 2. On a visit to Sierra Chincua I swerved just off the trail to the butterflies and found evidence of very recent cutting (pictures posted in the multi media section). One of these trees had clearly been girdled to kill it before cutting.

Strong enforcement will need to follow the strong words of President Calderon in order to make this work. I encourage you to view this website as an important tool in fighting this battle. I suggest not only that you monitor the site for information, but also promote its use as a tool to help you succeed at your presidents mission.

Thank you for your commitment to the forests of Mexico.
